How has screen time become a business pitfall?

The smartphone has become indispensable for entrepreneurs: you answer emails, follow up on customer communication, and manage your calendar with it. But at the same time, the temptation of social media, newsfeeds, and endless notifications is always lurking.

Because work and private life are increasingly intertwined, a constant state of 'being on' arises. As a result, entrepreneurs lose their deeper focus moments, which are essential for strategic thinking, creativity, and decision-making.

What does reducing screen time concretely yield you?

Reducing your screen time does not mean being less busy with work, but rather working smarter. By being more mindful of your phone usage, you gain time and mental space. This translates into more productive hours, as you work less fragmented.

You also improve your mental focus and create more space for creative or strategic endeavors. Lastly, you work towards a healthier work-life balance, an area that has deteriorated in the Netherlands over the past years. An improvement in this area contributes to less stress and makes you more energetic.

These benefits directly affect your entrepreneurship. They increase your output, reduce errors, and strengthen your decisiveness.

Practical steps to limit your screen time

Do you really want to reduce your screen time? Start with small, concrete actions:

  • Analyze your app usage using tools like 'Screen Time' (iOS) or 'Digital Wellbeing' (Android). You can immediately see where your time is going.
  • Set app timers for distracting apps. After a set time limit, the app automatically blocks access.
  • Turn off notifications from non-essential apps to limit interruptions.
  • Schedule phone-free blocks in your day for deep work
  • Create phone-free zones, such as meeting rooms or your home office.

How do you achieve this? Don't worry, there are plenty of tools to help you. Here are a few of our favorites:

  • Forest allows you to plant virtual trees that only grow when you don't use your phone.
  • Freedom blocks distracting websites and apps on all your devices at once.
  • Focus Keeper works according to the Pomodoro technique and promotes focused work in blocks

And to make it even easier, iOS and Android offer standard dashboards to measure and limit your screen time. The same goes for tools like Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace, which provide insights into your digital behavior at work level.

A cultural change: also in the workplace

Everyone is, of course, responsible for their own screen time, but with some tricks. Teams can make agreements about accessibility, notifications, and meeting times. Consider:

  • A 'no phones' policy during meetings.
  • Fixed check-in moments for emails or messages.
  • Leaders setting a good example by being more mindful of their screen time.

An open conversation about digital boundaries can increase the productivity of an entire team and help prevent burnouts.

Hybrid work environment

We hear you thinking; a large part of my internal communication must also be online. That makes sense, as many workplaces are now hybrid. When people are working from home, you want to be able to reach them at all times. But it is also important that you 'let your employees do their work'. This also means they need to reduce their screen time and not always be on.

It is advisable to schedule fixed contact moments instead of reaching out at random times. This way, colleagues can prepare and feel they are not being watched all the time. This creates calm and trust; they are not on guard for unexpected tasks, calls, or emails. Additionally, it fosters extra responsibility and engagement among your employees, who understand that you trust them to do what they need to do.

During the fixed contact moments, you can then delve deeper into the matter, while the meetings last shorter due to the preparation. With enough interaction, you maintain that engagement with remote workers.

Less screen, more control

Reducing your screen time is essentially synonymous with being more mindful of your screen usage. This does not reduce your communication; rather, it leads to more direct communication. Not constantly checking your email, but only when it matters. As an entrepreneur, you do not want to be constantly available but work effectively and purposefully. By critically examining your phone usage, you create space for what truly matters: focus, vision, and entrepreneurship.
