Electric Driving Becomes an Experience Again

The electric car has made enormous strides in recent years in terms of range, charging speed, and technology. At the same time, there is also a recurring sentiment: driving itself feels less exciting for many people than with an internal combustion engine.

Lexus is now responding to this with Interactive Manual Drive, a system that is being applied for the first time in the new Lexus RZ 550e F SPORT. This adds a new dimension to electric driving: active involvement of the driver.

Manual Shifting in an Electric Car

Where electric cars normally drive without gears, Lexus introduces a virtual eight-speed transmission. Drivers can shift themselves using paddles behind the steering wheel, similar to sporty gasoline cars.

The system continuously responds to the driver's behavior. The degree to which the accelerator pedal is pressed and the speed of the car together determine how the torque is built up. By shifting manually, a driving experience is created that strongly resembles a traditional powertrain, including the feeling of accelerating and decelerating per 'gear'.

This makes it possible to consciously downshift for a corner or build up extra power during an overtaking maneuver. The car responds directly and noticeably to this.

More Control, More Interaction

The strength of Interactive Manual Drive lies mainly in the interaction. The driver not only gains more control over the driving behavior but is also more actively involved in every ride.

The digital instrument panel supports this by providing visual feedback, such as a tachometer and clear shift indicators. This creates a driving experience in which the driver is continuously invited to make choices, rather than just steering and accelerating.

This fits into a broader trend where technology is not only focused on automation but also on enhancing the human role.

Sound as Part of the Driving Experience

An important part of that experience is sound. While electric cars are usually almost silent, Lexus has added a simulated engine sound that synchronizes with speed and torque.

This sound is delivered through the speakers in the cabin and can be adjusted to the driver's preference. The result is a driving experience that is not only tangible but also audibly more dynamic.

With this, Lexus addresses an aspect that is essential for many car enthusiasts: emotion.

Strategic Move in a Mature EV Market

The introduction of Interactive Manual Drive shows that the EV market is evolving. Where previously the competition was primarily based on technical specifications, the focus is increasingly shifting towards differentiation and brand experience.

For manufacturers, it is becoming more important to build not only efficient but also characterful electric cars. Especially now that the fundamentals – such as range and charging infrastructure – are becoming less distinctive.

For business drivers, this means that the choice for electric driving no longer has to be purely rational. Driving pleasure and involvement are once again part of the consideration.

Lexus RZ 550e F SPORT as a Technology Platform

Interactive Manual Drive debuts in the Lexus RZ 550e F SPORT, a fully electric SUV in the higher segment. The model combines this technology with other innovations, such as steer-by-wire, which provides a more direct steering experience.

The RZ series starts at 53,995 euros for the 350e Luxury Line, while the RZ 550e F SPORT with this new technology is available from 74,495 euros.

Conclusion

With Interactive Manual Drive, Lexus aims to bridge two worlds: the efficiency of electric driving and the emotion of traditional driving.

This combination may be exactly what is needed to convince a broader group of drivers. In a market that is rapidly maturing, the distinction is shifting from technology to experience.
