The Dakar Rally is one of the most legendary and toughest rally-raid events in the world: a race where both man and machine are tested to the limit time and again on rugged terrain and over vast distances. What started as an adventurous idea from one man has evolved into a global spectacle with thousands of participants, worldwide media attention, and a rich history full of exciting moments and controversies.

How it all began

The idea for the Dakar Rally originated in the 1970s with French motorcyclist Thierry Sabine. During the Abidjan–Nice Rally in 1977, he got lost in the Libyan desert. The combination of the overwhelming desert, endless horizon, and the challenge of finding his way back inspired him to create something great: a race from Europe to the African desert.

On December 26, 1978, 170 adventurers finally set off from Paris for what would later be called the Paris-Dakar Rally. The route - about 10,000 kilometers through Algeria, Niger, Mali, and finally Senegal - was designed from day one to force participants to push their physical, mental, and navigation skills to the limit. Only 74 teams reached the finish at the Place de l'Indépendance in Dakar.

The years in Africa

Although Dakar lost its role as a start or endpoint several times over the years, the race always retained its name, as a tribute to the Senegalese capital. Since 2009, the city has not been included anymore due to too much terrorist threat in the area.

The rally in Africa had its highlights, but also tragic moments. During the very first edition, dozens of fatalities occurred, both among participants and spectators, and in 1986, founder Thierry Sabine himself lost his life in a helicopter crash in the desert.

Safety and geographical changes

In 2008, reality showed how risky the situation could be in some regions. That edition was largely canceled due to concerns about possible terrorist threats, after which the organization decided to move the event to another continent.

From 2009, the Dakar Rally was held in South America for ten years, with start and finish often around the Argentine capital Buenos Aires and routes through Argentina, Chile, Peru, and Bolivia. This brought new challenges, from Andes heights to salt flats and a huge diversity of landscapes.

From South America to the Middle East

In 2020, the event moved again, this time to Saudi Arabia. The vast desert areas of the kingdom have since served as the backdrop for the Dakar Rally, often featuring spectacular dunes, desert plateaus, and technically demanding paths that combine classic rally skills with extreme off-road endurance.

The character of the Dakar Rally

What distinguishes the Dakar Rally from other motorsport events is not only the length of often thousands of kilometers spread over two weeks, but also the combination of navigation, mechanical knowledge, and resilience. Participants drive motorcycles, cars, trucks, and quads over sand dunes, rocky paths, and dry riverbeds, relying solely on a roadbook and GPS as guides.

From the beginning, both amateurs and professionals were welcome. Although professionals now occupy the majority of the top spots, the Dakar is famous for its mix of hobby drivers and seasoned racers who take on the challenge together.

Half a century of history: Dakar Rally rolls on

Today, the Dakar Rally symbolizes adventure, struggle, and perseverance. The race has enriched the global motorsport culture and produced numerous legendary stories - from razor-thin results to tales of participants pushing physical and mental boundaries.

With nearly fifty editions behind it, the Dakar Rally continues to evolve, both in location and in technology, but the core remains unchanged: an ultimate test of man and machine in one of the toughest races on earth.
