Today, the Netherlands Clean Foundation, Milieu Centraal, and Zero Waste Netherlands introduce a window sticker that inspires consumers to bring their own reusable packaging. The three organizations are joining forces to support the new regulations that came into effect on July 1. An enlarged version of the updated sticker was placed on the window of KEEK in Utrecht: a biological bakery that has embraced the philosophy. The three organizations call on entrepreneurs to place the sticker on their windows, thereby lowering the threshold for consumers to bring their own reusable packaging. The Netherlands Clean Foundation, Milieu Centraal, and Zero Waste Netherlands share the belief that preventing waste is better than cleaning up. In the coming time, they will work together to promote this vision to a broad audience. The sticker for entrepreneurs is now available through the webshop. The first orders will not incur shipping costs.

Encouraging reuse to prevent waste

The first updated sticker was placed on the window of KEEK in Utrecht. They see that customers are participating in the transition to make reuse the new norm. By placing the sticker on the window, entrepreneurs send a clear signal that their own reusable packaging is welcome in their establishment. This lowers the threshold for consumers to use their own packaging in shops and hospitality. By bringing reusable packaging, the production of single-use plastic packaging is reduced, thus preventing waste.

A small sticker with a big impact

Zero Waste Netherlands is the initiator of the window sticker with 'feel free to bring your own packaging'. The sticker is intended to lower the threshold. Initiator Elisah Pals explains: "I sometimes felt hesitant or embarrassed to go somewhere with my own packaging, while I really wanted to produce less waste. When I did, I always ended up having a nice conversation with the entrepreneur who also wanted to use less plastic and packaging. There was a lack of a communication tool to solve this social dilemma. The idea is very simple. And the nice thing is: it works!" The sticker is not a certification or obligation, but a friendly invitation. Do you see the sticker? Here, own packaging is completely welcome.

In addition to the sticker, sharing knowledge and providing support is also part of the collaboration. For example, each other's campaigns, research, and activations will be promoted on the channels of the three organizations. Ingrid Goethart, director (a.i.) of the Netherlands Clean Foundation, adds: "For a month now, our awareness campaign has been live featuring various 'Supporters of Clean', such as the Sustainable Drinker and the Experienced Reuser. These examples inspire consumers to prevent (litter) waste and encourage reuse. The window sticker is a great addition to achieving our common goal and ensuring that the Netherlands becomes clean. I am proud of this unique collaboration and hope to see the sticker often. I also look forward to shaping further collaboration with Milieu Centraal and Zero Waste Netherlands."

"With the window sticker, it is clear to consumers at a glance where they can use their own container or cup to pick something up. Clarity for the consumer helps make the step easier," says Ika van de Pas, director of Milieu Centraal. "As an independent knowledge center, we provide consumers with practical tips and advice for every sustainable step and wholeheartedly support this initiative. Together, we prevent (plastic) disposable packaging and lower the threshold for using reusable packaging. That is better for the environment."
