Ford wants to be more than just a car manufacturer

The European car market is under pressure. Electrification, stricter regulations, changing mobility, and rising costs force car manufacturers to make tough choices. Ford consciously opts for a dual strategy: the brand wants to maintain its strong position in commercial vehicles while simultaneously introducing a new generation of passenger cars that better meet European demands.

During a meeting with European dealers and partners, Ford presented its plans for the coming years. It's not just about new vehicles, but especially about connected services, software, and practical usability. With seven new models, extensive digital services, and a clear message to policymakers, Ford aims to position itself more firmly in a rapidly changing market.

For entrepreneurs and fleet managers, the greatest gains lie not only in new vehicles but especially in higher productivity, less downtime, and lower operational costs.

Ford Pro aims to make businesses more productive

Ford is heavily investing in Ford Pro, the business platform through which the brand increasingly positions itself as a technology and productivity partner.

According to Ford, the future of commercial vehicles lies not only in hardware but especially in data, predictive maintenance, and connected services. This translates into software that continuously monitors vehicles and tries to predict maintenance issues before they actually occur.

Since 2019, all Ford Pro commercial vehicles have been standard equipped with a built-in modem. Currently, more than 1.2 million connected vehicles are on the road in Europe, generating nearly six million status updates per day.

Ford uses this data, among other things, for its Uptime Services. This allows dealers to proactively schedule maintenance, prepare parts, and alert customers before a vehicle breaks down. This can be financially interesting for companies that rely on their fleet.

According to Ford, the connected services provided nearly a million additional deployable days for customers last year.

Smart maintenance aims to reduce downtime

New is that Ford is now explicitly making these predictive maintenance services available to smaller businesses.

Through so-called Dealer Uptime Services, every dealer takes on a more active role as a data-driven service partner. Dealers remotely monitor vehicle statuses and can respond more quickly to impending issues.

The first pilots show, according to Ford, that repair times can decrease by up to 50 percent. Additionally, about 80 percent of maintenance issues would already be identified in advance.

For many companies, this is more relevant than an extra screen or new gadget. A delivery van that unexpectedly breaks down means immediate loss of revenue, scheduling problems, and lower availability of staff.

New commercial vehicles must respond to stricter European regulations

In addition to software, Ford is also introducing new commercial vehicles that respond to changing regulations and specific business needs.

Ranger Super Duty targets heavy sectors

The Ranger has been Europe's best-selling pickup for years. Now a new variant is being added: the Ranger Super Duty.

This version specifically targets sectors such as emergency services, forestry, mining, and defense. Ford positions the model as an extremely robust work pickup with a maximum towing weight of 8 tons and a towing capacity of up to 4.5 tons.

Additionally, the Ranger Super Duty will feature:

  • heavy-duty suspension;
  • extra underbody protection;
  • increased ground clearance;
  • a payload capacity of nearly 2 tons.

With this, Ford clearly targets organizations that deploy vehicles under heavy conditions.

Transit City aims to make zero-emission zones easier

Ford is also introducing the fully electric Transit City. This commercial vehicle is specifically developed for urban areas where zero-emission zones are becoming increasingly common.

According to Ford, the Transit City should primarily appeal to cost-conscious companies that are still hesitant about full electrification.

The electric van will be available in multiple variants, including a chassis-cab variant for custom builds. Ford positions the model as an accessible entry-level option for urban distribution and service companies.

Ford is also bringing five new passenger cars to Europe

In addition to commercial vehicles, Ford is also working on a renewed offering of passenger cars for the European market.

Notably, Ford is heavily leaning on its rally and off-road DNA. The brand aims to build more characterful models that combine sportiness with practical usability.

By the end of 2029, five new models will be launched:

  • a compact Bronco SUV for Europe;
  • a fully electric hatchback;
  • a small electric SUV;
  • two new multi-energy crossovers.

Compact Bronco comes from Spain

A striking addition is a new compact member of the Bronco family. This SUV will be built in Valencia starting in 2028 and aims to combine the adventurous character of the Bronco with European dimensions and driving characteristics.

With this, Ford tries to smartly respond to the enduring popularity of compact SUVs in Europe.

Electric models will have a sporty character

The new electric hatchback and compact SUV are also expected to feel distinctly sporty. Ford speaks of "race-to-road" characteristics and rally-inspired design.

The brand aims to distinguish itself from competitors who primarily focus on minimalist EV designs and maximum efficiency.

Ford calls on Europe for more realistic EV policy

In addition to product news, Ford also used the presentation to send a political signal.

According to the company, European regulations regarding emission targets risk becoming too detached from reality. Especially for smaller businesses and commercial users, mandatory electrification and stricter requirements can have significant financial implications.

Ford therefore advocates for a more realistic transition model, where plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and electric vehicles with range extenders (EREVs) continue to play an important role.

Additionally, the brand calls for attention to charging infrastructure and the complex European production chains in which countries like Turkey, Morocco, and the United Kingdom play a significant role.

This call aligns with broader discussions within the European automotive industry, where several brands warn that the transition to fully electric transport is progressing faster than the infrastructure and market acceptance can handle.

Ford explicitly opts for a practical strategy

What stands out about Ford's new European course is the emphasis on practical usability.

The brand tries to profile itself less with futuristic concepts or extreme digitalization, and more with concrete benefits for entrepreneurs, fleet managers, and daily users.

For businesses, the story revolves primarily around:

  • less downtime;
  • predictable maintenance;
  • higher productivity;
  • lower operational costs;
  • more flexible electrification.

With this, Ford increasingly positions itself as a technology partner rather than just a car manufacturer.

Whether this strategy is sufficient to fend off competition from Chinese EV brands and European rivals remains to be seen in the coming years. But it is clear that Ford is not giving up on Europe anytime soon.
