Many people expected Brexit to affect purchases from British webshops, according to research by the Dutch Customs. Yet nearly a quarter of respondents believe Brexit will not impact their shopping behavior. They expect to make just as many purchases from British webshops, even if there are potential additional costs.
Mariska Mirer, a specialist in Post & Couriers at Customs, explains: "As a result of corona, more and more people are shopping online. Also at British webshops. Therefore, we ask people to take into account the changed rules regarding VAT and customs duties. If you are not aware of this, it can be an unpleasant surprise."
The rules for ordering from a British webshop have been the same since January 1, 2021, as when ordering from outside the EU. Such as from the United States or China. You pay VAT on purchases costing €22 or more. You also pay customs duties if the purchase value is higher than €150. In both cases, you pay the additional costs to the package delivery person, who also charges clearance fees for this.
Be mindful of what you buy
Not everything you buy is allowed to be imported. Counterfeit items, such as imitation shoes, are always confiscated by Customs. A waste of money. Other products are also not allowed in the Netherlands. Think of food items like cheese and meat, art and antiques, products from protected animal species, and medicines.
