We often deny it, prefer not to think about it, but it is true: we judge people largely based on what we see with our eyes. If a man approaches us at a networking event wearing an old cardigan, we will simply react differently than to a man dressed in a smart suit. Only after the visible assessment do we look at someone's character and listen to their stories. However, that is often too late. It is better to take this into account when choosing your outfit, because other people's impressions do have – whether we like it or not – some value.

Outfit

Wearing clothing from a large, well-known brand can greatly influence how people perceive you. Think about it the other way around. If you see someone walking in wearing clothes from a brand like Balr, you will look at that person differently than someone who approaches you in less trendy clothing. No matter how you turn it, whether we want to or not, we simply judge people largely based on what we see and only then on other matters.

The big question is which part of your outfit you present to the outside world – and which part you don't. Because let's be honest: you can't 'shine' in all aspects. Dressing flamboyantly is not only expensive: a flashy impression is quickly left behind in assembled, chic clothing. Dressing 'over the top' simply backfires. Less is more, so it is wise to make choices.

Accessories help in finding the right balance. A watch can make the difference between boring and inspired. For example, if you choose a Seiko Astron model, you immediately show the outside world that you have things well under control. And that can make networking successful quickly.

Casual or chic

It can also vary from day to day whether you go to work dressed casually or very chic. This can depend on meetings, presentations, or visits from outsiders. When in doubt, it is always better to come across as too formal than too casual. Maintaining professionalism is important after all.
