Almost one in three self-employed entrepreneurs (30%) admits that they could have invested more time in their own development since the start of the corona pandemic. This is evident from research by Younited® and Opleiding.nl among 524 self-employed entrepreneurs. Twenty percent of the entrepreneurs received corona support, but only a small percentage used it to take a course or training. Only eighteen percent indicate that they have (partially) used the corona support to further their education.

Training necessary to achieve goals

Despite the corona support, costs often remain a significant reason for self-employed entrepreneurs not to pursue training or courses. No less than one in three (32%) indicates that they currently lack sufficient financial security to take a course, even though it is actually necessary for their own development. A similar percentage (35%) believes that training is essential to achieve what they want. However, which course or training that should be is not always clear. A quarter of the entrepreneurs (24%) indicates that they would like to talk to someone to find out which areas require development.

Little work done on new skills

When entrepreneurs look at other entrepreneurs, they also see room for improvement regarding their own development. Half (49%) indicates that they hardly see other entrepreneurs doing anything for further education. Another 36 percent barely notice that fellow entrepreneurs are learning new skills. Developing skills ensures that you can execute your project or assignment well; lack of development can make it more difficult to secure assignments.

Jort Zwolsman, director at Younited®: "The corona pandemic is unfortunately still with us two years later and affects many professions, including self-employed entrepreneurs. Many entrepreneurs have focused on retaining assignments or finding new ones to ensure financial security over the past two years. Of course, this is very logical, but part of the time could have been well spent developing new skills or updating knowledge to remain attractive to new clients. Even alongside a project or assignment, there is usually enough room to continue developing. Together with Opleiding.nl, we offer a clear platform where self-employed entrepreneurs can see at a glance which training or courses they should follow."
