The Banker tells the true story of two African American entrepreneurs, Bernard Garrett and Joe Morris, who develop a bold strategy in the '50s and '60s to break down racial barriers in the real estate and banking world. Because Black businesspeople at the time had little access to capital or investment opportunities, they come up with a striking plan: they hire a white man, Matt Steiner, to act as the public face of their company while they work in the background. They do this incognito, as a driver or doorman, for example.
Thanks to this clever move, they manage to buy real estate, take over a bank, and make loans possible for Black Americans who would otherwise never receive credit. Ultimately, their success attracts the attention of the authorities, and they face difficult choices about risks, ideals, and personal sacrifices.
The Banker: a film for entrepreneurs
Of course, we can be glad that we have moved past the harsh reality of the '50s and '60s, but The Banker still imparts important lessons. The way Garrett and Morris think outside traditional paths, in this case by using a 'frontman' to gain access to markets that would otherwise be closed to them, is a powerful lesson in strategic innovation. It shows that obstacles can lead to creative solutions and new opportunities.
You also see that their ambition goes beyond profit alone. They strive to create economic opportunities for their community in a time of institutional discrimination - a great example of purpose-driven entrepreneurship. The Banker shows that great successes also come with great risks. The characters must make difficult choices as their company comes under legal and societal fire, a realistic portrayal of the sacrifices entrepreneurs may encounter. Again, fortunately, those are no longer as harsh as they were back then.
Finally, the dynamics between the main characters emphasize the importance of teamwork, trust, and shared vision in entrepreneurship. The two complement each other fantastically and know exactly what they have in each other.
A true cross-pollination
The Banker is a must-see for anyone interested in the cross-pollination between business, social impact, and strategic entrepreneurship. The film is available on AppleTV.
