Why this is relevant for business drivers

More and more European cities are implementing environmental zones to improve air quality. This may sound like something for tourists to consider, but entrepreneurs visiting clients in Paris, Frankfurt, or Munich are also affected. The zones apply to everyone, without exception.

A fine for driving without a sticker in France is at least €68 for passenger cars. In Germany, it is around €100. Moreover, missing access to an environmental zone could cost you a client appointment or valuable travel time. That is a risk that you simply do not want to take as a business owner.

France: the Crit'Air sticker

For business traffic to France, the Crit'Air sticker is mandatory. This sticker indicates how clean your vehicle is and is required in the environmental zones of cities like Paris, Lyon, Strasbourg, and Grenoble. The sticker has a color based on your car's emission class. Newer gasoline cars generally fall into a higher class than older diesels. There are six classes in total, with class 1 being the cleanest.

What many drivers do not know: the requirement applies year-round in more and more French cities, not just during smog alerts or peak days. Those who regularly drive to France for business should arrange the sticker once and then not have to worry about it again.

The application is officially processed through the French government, and the physical sticker is sent by post. Expect a delivery time of two to three weeks. If you need to travel sooner, you're in luck: with an online application, you will receive a temporary digital version within 48 hours that you can print and stick on your window until the physical sticker arrives. The sticker is permanently valid and linked to the vehicle, not the driver.

Germany: the Umweltplakette

For trips to Germany, you need the Umweltplakette. This green sticker is mandatory in the environmental zones of almost all major German cities, including Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt, and Cologne. For most newer vehicles, the green sticker is readily available. Yellow and red stickers are no longer accepted in most zones, and very old diesels without a particulate filter are no longer eligible at all. Note: even electric cars with a foreign license plate need the green sticker to enter an environmental zone. Driving without a sticker results in a fine of around €100.

Unlike the French Crit'Air, there is no temporary digital version for the Umweltplakette. The physical sticker must be affixed to the window before entering an environmental zone. So, plan this in advance. The sticker is relatively inexpensive and, like the French variant, is valid permanently as long as the vehicle remains in the same emission class. For entrepreneurs who regularly drive to Germany, it is wise to have the sticker standard on the business car so that you do not have to worry about it.

Business car or lease car: who is responsible?

A question that often arises among entrepreneurs: what if you are driving a lease car? In most cases, the driver is responsible for having the correct sticker. The sticker is linked to the vehicle. Check this in advance with your leasing company so that you know whether the sticker is already present or if you need to apply for it yourself. Avoid discovering this only at the border or at the edge of an environmental zone.

Just arrange it in advance

The environmental sticker is not a large investment, but not having it can lead to costs or disrupt your planning. For entrepreneurs who regularly drive to Germany or France, the advice is simple: arrange it once, stick it on the window, and forget about it. Both stickers remain permanently valid as long as your car falls within the same emission class.

Before you depart, check whether your destination has an environmental zone, which sticker you need, and if there is enough time for delivery if you want the physical version. Want to quickly find out what you need and apply directly? You can easily buy an Environmental Sticker for Germany or arrange the French variant so that you are fully prepared for your trip.
