From donating to doing: other ways to give back

Especially young adults between 18 and 34 years old indicate that they donate less (54%). The age group that generally has the most disposable income (35 to 54 years) saves the least on donations (45%). Due to rising costs, one in three Dutch people (32%) is looking for other ways to support charities than a fixed amount per month, such as volunteering at a local foundation.

Giving remains personal and happens all year round

Whether it's a sponsored walk from your niece or a challenge from a friend on Instagram: especially actions from family and friends are popular (25%). Additionally, 22% of people support multiple charities monthly, while 19% focus on one favorite cause. Although many donations traditionally occur around the holidays, Dutch people donate an average of eight times a year to a good cause.

War or natural disaster? The Netherlands does not reach for the wallet more often

Although young adults often speak out on issues like climate change, human rights, and social injustices, only 17% of them donate more during crises than usual. Other age groups do this more often: 27% of 35 to 54-year-olds and 28% of those over 55 indicate that they donate extra in such situations.

Donating at the checkout: small amount, big gesture

The traditional collection box at the door or the donation jar at the checkout is seen less and less. Not surprising, as who still carries cash? Fortunately, at 42% of physical stores in the Netherlands, you have the option to donate to a charity at checkout. This is important, as more than half (51%) drop out if donating is not easy or cannot be done in their own way.

Rounding up the purchase amount at the checkout is also popular: one in five Dutch people (19%) has made a donation this way. A nice gesture, especially now that the holidays are approaching and you want to give something back while shopping.

Dominique Simons, Head of Impact at Adyen, inspires people to contribute to beautiful charities during the holidays. 'You can easily support a charity at your favorite brand, retailer, or platform: from H&M and L'Occitane to Decathlon, Etsy, and cinema chain VUE. This is valuable for the organization, and often you support initiatives they are already working on at a larger scale. You simply donate at checkout: accessible and simple. And the great thing is: your donation is doubled, making your impact immediately greater.'
