Start with your workday, not with "ladies' model"

Your work determines which features your shoes need to solve. If you start from there, you will more quickly find a model that remains comfortable throughout the shift, rather than a shoe that just looks nice.

If you walk a lot on hard floors like concrete or in a warehouse, cushioning and stability help make turning and pivoting feel less tiring. On wet or slippery surfaces, a tread with grip makes it easier to walk normally without unconsciously holding back. If you frequently switch between indoors and outdoors, it's nice if a shoe stays less damp for a shorter time when it gets wet. And if there's a chance of bumps or falling objects, a safety shoe with a protective toe (such as steel or composite) provides extra cushioning.

If you choose based on your work situation, the model is not always the "smartest". However, the feel on your feet remains predictable, and that just feels more relaxed.

Width: how to quickly recognize what fits your foot

You often feel width before length. Pay attention to these signals; they quickly tell you whether a model is narrow, normal, or wide:

- Pressure at your little toe or a tight edge at the ball of your foot: your forefoot is getting too little space. A wider last (or a model that runs wider) provides more room without needing to take a longer size.

- Heel slip (your heel moves up and down): often the model doesn't fit well around the heel or instep. Preferably choose a shoe that grips better there, so your heel stabilizes without needing to go down a size.

- Pressure on top of your foot while your laces are not tight: then the instep space is the limiting factor. A model with more room at the instep (or a different closure) usually distributes that pressure more comfortably.

Handy to remember: work shoes often feel stiffer than sneakers, partly due to a sturdier toe. Therefore, the same size can feel different, especially with thicker work socks or an insole.

Fit smart: with your actual socks, preferably later in the day

Fit preferably later in the day: your feet may be a bit fuller then, which is more realistic for a long shift. Put on your work socks and possibly use your own insole. Then do a short walking test: walk for a few minutes, do some stair movements, and bend your knees a bit. This way, you quickly notice if your toes remain free and if the instep feels firm without sharp pressure.

If you feel pressure at the forefoot while your heel fits well, it is often the last that is too narrow. A wider last in the same size then provides the space you are missing. If your heel moves while the forefoot fits well, prefer a model that holds your heel better than going down a size: the problem lies in the fit, not in the length.

When you better choose a different type

Sometimes it’s not about size or width, but about the type of shoe. You notice this by where and when you experience discomfort: the model pushes your foot in a direction that doesn't suit your work.

A heavier or stiffer model can feel calmer with a lot of walking and turning, while a lighter model with noticeably more cushioning can take more work off your feet. If you often work in cold or wet conditions, a very breathable model is nice indoors, but outside, extra protection against moisture or cold often provides longer comfort. If your feet stay cold for a long time, or if your shoe feels wet and clammy for a long time, a model with more protection usually helps more, even if it’s a bit warmer inside.
